What is an allotment?
An allotment is a plot of land rented to organizations, school groups, restaurants, individuals or families for gardening purposes, also known as a community garden or garden plot. The main focus is on growing food plants, such as fruit and vegetables, but some people also grow ornamental plants.
Lightwell Lavender Farm is a 10-acre lavender farm on Old Mission Peninsula (2150 Carroll Road). We are the closest lavender farm to downtown Traverse City, Michigan. Boasting ten varieties of lavender and over 6,000 established lavender plants – Lightwell hopes to improve biodiversity and transition from monocrop agriculture to a regenerative farming model. We value community engagement and farm-fresh nourishment – and are excited to offer a piece of our bespoke farm for community growth!

· A desire to grow your own food or flowers with prime conditions (i.e. your current garden has too much shade, no irrigation, restrictive association rules prohibiting kitchen gardens, or you have a general desire not to have your garlic patch in prime backyard real estate!)
· Apartment, transient, seasonal or other accommodations that restrict long-term garden planning
· An interest in meeting a community of local gardeners supportive of regenerative agricultural practices
· Access to pollinators and compost! Our bees are buzzing all summer, and we are proud to partner with Carter’s Compost

Gardening is an excellent way to get physical activity, foster as sense of accomplishment and improve self-sufficiency.
• Plan and maintain reliable food source or hedge against increased produce pricing for local, farm-to-table restaurants
• Improve sustainability by growing food without harmful inputs
• Produce your own cut flowers and farm goods to sell at our farm shop, local farmer’s market, or subscription/CSA service
• Participate in seed saving, educational and regenerative practices
Smell the flowers, feel the breeze, breathe in deeply and let your feet connect with the earth as you let the garden do its thing.

“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.”
